Tigre and Tres Bocas

Tigre and the delta
If you ever happen to be in Buenos Aires for more than two or three days, I definitely recommend that you take a day-trip to the city of Tigre and the surrounding delta. I went there on a grey and rainy day with an Australian girl named Keri, who I had met at my hostel in Buenos Aires.

Going to Tigre turned out to be really easy.
We began our trip by taking the metro to the Retiro train station. From here we took a local train to the station of Olivos. We could have taken the local train all the way, but we had decided that, on the way there, we would take the scenic route and travel on “Tren de la Costa”, which runs along the coast. The journey was really nice and relaxing and it wasn’t long before we had reached our destination.

Tigre itself is a pleasant little town where you can visit a market called Puerto de Frutos (which of course we missed) and walk by the canal. There is also an amusement park right when you get off the train, but after seeing the big group of Argentine teenagers waiting to get in, we decided it probably wasn’t for us.
The real attraction, however, is taking one of the frequent commuter launches to the neighborhood of Tres Bocas. It is cheaper to buy the ticket for the boats to Tres Bocas at a little office in the terminal building and not at the tourist office. If you buy them at the tourist office you pay an extra fee that you can get back, but only if you eat at a designated restaurant. Having the option of choosing where to eat when you get to Tres Bocas is a good thing, because not all the restaurants in Tres Bocas look inviting.
Despite the beginning rain, the boat ride out to Tres Bocas was really scenic passing by old colonial buildings and pretty landscapes. However, when we got there it was raining a lot more so instead of spending some time wandering the little paths we headed straight for a restaurant to have lunch. The restaurant, which had been recommended by a local woman we met right after getting off the boat, turned out to be great. We had a really nice steak with grilled vegetables and paid about 40 Argentine pesos per person and that was with a glass of wine.

After lunch it was still raining a lot so we ended up running back to the little pier to wait for the boat back to Tigre. Had the weather been nicer it would have been a cool place to walk around for a while or maybe rent a kayak and explore some of the small canals.
Next time I guess…
